Facts & figures

Salzburg is the capital city of the county of the same name. 149,355 have registered their main place of abode here making it the fourth largest city in Austria after Vienna, Graz and Linz. The administrative capital is almost completely surrounded by the region known as Salzburg-Umgebung.

Salzburg is also known as the city of Mozart. Both sides of the river lie in the Salzburg basin and the city was re-founded as a bishopric on Roman ruins (Iuvavum). The city achieved immense wealth from the mining and trading of salt and became a bishoprical residence of architectural splendour during the reigns of Wolf Dietrich and his successors. The old part of the city is a UNESCO world cultural heritage site and the area around the palace in Hellbrunn are proof of Salzburg’s extensive cultural history. Today the city is a place to go shopping with a wide range of boutiques and services. It is also known for its capacity to host trade fairs and congresses. Above all, Salzburg is a city of tourism and the old town, the Salzburg Festival and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart have also helped Salzburg to achieve international acclaim.
